Synopsis: In the impoverished townships of Cape Town, local NGO Abalimi Bezekhaya is lifting families out of poverty, reducing hunger, improving health, and creating climate resilience through organic urban gardening. Since their founding in 1983, they’ve trained tens of thousands of township gardeners, supported hundreds of gardens, and established an expansive network of local farmers. In doing so, Abalimi and its powerhouse leader, Christina Kaba, also promote environmental education and sustainable urban practices. The Abalimi team is taking immediate action for the most vulnerable populations, and through grassroots networks addressing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
